Working While Studying: What Are the Rules by Country?

Work Rules for Students Abroad Explained in Simple Steps

Many students from India and other countries dream of going abroad for higher education. While studying in another country, many students also want to work part-time. This helps them earn some money, manage daily expenses, and gain work experience. But each country has different rules for students who want to work during their studies.

In this article, we will explain Working While Studying: What Are the Rules by Country? in simple and clear words. You will learn what is allowed, how many hours you can work, and what to avoid.

Why Do Students Work While Studying?

Studying abroad can be expensive. Tuition fees, food, rent, transport — all these things cost money. Working part-time helps students cover some of these costs. It also helps students learn useful skills like time management, communication, and teamwork. Some students also do internships in their field of study to get experience for future jobs.

Working While Studying in Canada

Canada allows international students to work while they study. If you are studying full-time at a college or university, you can work up to 20 hours per week during regular school time. During breaks like summer or winter holidays, you can work full-time, which means up to 40 hours per week.

To work in Canada, you do not need a separate work permit if you have a valid study permit. But you must make sure your school is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), and your program must be at least 6 months long.

Working While Studying in the United Kingdom (UK)

In the UK, international students are also allowed to work part-time. If you are studying a full-time degree at a university, you can work up to 20 hours per week during term time. During vacations, you can work full-time.

Students studying below degree level (like diploma or foundation programs) can usually work 10 hours per week. Always check your visa to see the exact number of hours you are allowed to work.

Working While Studying in the United States (USA)

In the USA, international students on an F-1 visa have limited options to work off-campus. During the first year, students are allowed to work only on campus, up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session.

After one academic year, students can apply for off-campus jobs under CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or OPT (Optional Practical Training), but only if the job is related to their course. You must get approval before starting any off-campus work.

Working While Studying in Australia

Australia is a student-friendly country with clear rules for working while studying. International students with a student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight (every 2 weeks) while their classes are in session. This means about 24 hours per week.

During official school holidays, there is no limit, and students can work full-time. Australia also has a good minimum wage, so students can earn enough to support daily expenses.

Working While Studying in New Zealand

In New Zealand, international students can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during scheduled holidays if they are studying full-time for at least 2 years or in a program that leads to a qualification for skilled jobs.

The job must not affect your studies. Like other countries, you must also follow the rules written on your visa.

General Rules All Students Must Follow

No matter which country you choose, there are some basic rules that apply everywhere:

Never work more than allowed: If you work more than the legal limit, your visa can be cancelled.

Keep your grades up: If your grades drop, you may lose your right to stay or work.

Know your visa conditions: Always read and follow the rules on your student visa.

Work safely: Choose legal jobs. Avoid working in unsafe or illegal places.

Pay taxes: In most countries, students need to pay some taxes on their earnings.

Choosing the Right Job

Students often work in restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, delivery services, or as assistants on campus. These jobs are easy to find and offer flexible hours. Try to choose a job that also helps you learn new skills or is related to your field of study.

If your course allows, try to get internships or co-op placements. These are great for your resume and can help you get a job after graduation.
