According to a recent survey, students' top consideration when choosing where to study is currently the expense of studying abroad. According to the ApplyBoard study, 77% of students stated that reasonable tuition costs were the most important factor to them. This is becoming more important because the cost of living and tuition is rising all over the world.
Even though many students are worried about high costs, most of them are still planning to study abroad. Only 9% of students said they would delay their studies because of these worries. Instead, students are looking for other options. They are thinking about studying in different countries or choosing programs that cost less.
The survey also showed that many students are considering new countries to study in. Countries like Denmark, Finland, Nigeria, and Italy are becoming popular choices for students. These places are now seen as good alternatives to the traditional study destinations like the US, the UK, and Canada.
A big part of the reason students are choosing these new places is because they are more affordable. In fact, about 55% of the students said they would need to work part-time while studying to cover their costs.
Besides affordability, students care about finding a good job after their studies. That’s why many students are choosing fields like software engineering, civil engineering, and nursing. Technology fields like IT, cybersecurity, and data analysis are also growing in popularity.
More students are also looking at graduate degrees. Over half of the students in the survey said they were thinking about doing a master's degree. Some students are even considering PhD programs, which saw a small rise in interest this year.
The survey covered more than 3,500 students from 84 countries. Countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Canada, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India had the most students taking part. It’s interesting to note that China, which sends a lot of students abroad, wasn’t in the top 10 most represented countries.
As students are changing where they want to study, schools need to adapt. They should talk more about scholarships, financial aid, and part-time job opportunities. Schools can also offer hybrid learning programs and flexible study options like accelerated degrees to make education more accessible.
Despite rising costs, many students are still interested in studying in one of the six most popular countries: Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, Germany, and Ireland. Canada remains especially popular. Even though the country has placed limits on how many international students can come, it still attracts a lot of students. This is because Canada offers benefits like allowing students to bring their families with them and giving them opportunities to work after graduation.
