Netherlands Backs Resolution to Retain International Students

The Netherlands is taking steps to ensure that international students stay in the country after graduation, a move that highlights the importance of their contributions to the country's economy. The decision was supported by three parties in the Dutch government, marking a major shift in how the nation plans to attract and retain skilled international talent.

This resolution comes in response to a decrease in the number of skilled international workers coming to the Netherlands, which could negatively impact the economy. According to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), the number of skilled workers coming to the country has declined, a trend that many believe could harm the Dutch economy. The motion passed in January 2025 asks the government to develop a strategy to encourage international students to remain in the country after completing their studies.

Approximately 128,000 overseas students are currently enrolled in Dutch universities, which is almost one-sixth of the overall student body. However, for the 2023–2024 academic year, the growth rate of international student enrollment has dropped to just 5.4%.

Dutch universities have shown strong support for this proposal, recognizing the valuable role that international graduates play in addressing labor market shortages and boosting the country's global competitiveness. Many universities agree that international students are essential for meeting the demands of the economy, especially in sectors where there is a need for skilled workers.

The proposed action plan aims to make it easier for international students to remain in the Netherlands after graduation. This plan's main elements include improved career support services, a quicker visa application process, and tax breaks for companies hiring foreign graduates. The goal of these adjustments is to give foreign students who have studied in the Netherlands the chance to stay and work in the nation and contribute to the workforce.

This initiative also reflects a broader effort to diversify the Dutch workforce. By retaining international talent, the Netherlands hopes to strengthen its position in the global market and encourage innovation and economic growth. International students are seen as crucial to achieving these goals, and the Dutch government is committed to creating an environment that supports their long-term success.
