Lessons from Oxford Test of English Launch on Attracting International Students

A recent event in Oxford focused on the challenges and solutions for recruiting international students to universities in the UK. The event was held at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government. It was organized by Oxford University Press and also marked the launch of the new Oxford Test of English. The event gave university leaders a chance to discuss how international student recruitment is changing, and what universities can do to attract students.

One of the key topics discussed was the UK's immigration policy. University leaders are waiting for the UK government’s new immigration plan, also known as the "immigration white paper". Harry Anderson, the deputy director at Universities UK International (UUKi), shared that the government is expected to create stricter rules about who can come to the UK for studying.

He clarified that despite having a center-left government, the UK is still likely to impose additional immigration barriers. University administrators are being ready for these changes because the government has pledged to lower net migration. Immigration will remain a significant problem, particularly in terms of attracting in international students.

Another key point discussed at the event was the growing role of Asian countries in the global education market. Edwin Van Rest, the CEO of StudyPortals, mentioned that Asia is becoming more important when it comes to both providing and receiving higher education.

In the past, Asian countries were mainly seen as sources of international students, but that’s changing. Countries in Asia, such as China, India, and Malaysia, are becoming bigger players in international education. Students from countries like China are now looking at options not just in the UK but also in other parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore.

Sara Pierson, a marketing director at Oxford University Press, talked about the increased competition for international students. Universities in the UK are no longer just competing with universities in English-speaking countries like the US and Canada, but also with non-English-speaking countries in Asia. Universities need to stand out and offer something unique to attract students.

Diversity in student recruitment was another important topic. University leaders agreed that diversity should not only be about the nationality of students. James Brown, who works at the University of Oxford, explained that universities need to think about diversity in other ways, such as gender, social background, and whether a student comes from a rural or urban area.

The event also discussed how the UK’s diverse population is a big reason why international students are attracted to study there. Universities in the UK should highlight their diversity to show how it adds to the student experience.

The event also focused on how UK universities need to adjust their recruitment strategies. With the global situation constantly changing, universities need to be smart about where they recruit students from. Harry Anderson explained that while countries like India and China are still important sources of international students, the competition for these students is getting tougher. Universities need to look at other smaller markets and make their recruitment efforts stronger and more sustainable.

Finally, there was a discussion about how universities need to ensure their recruitment practices are transparent and fair. With the UK government focusing on reducing immigration, universities need to be very careful about their recruitment strategies. If universities are seen letting in students who do not meet the necessary language or academic requirements, it could harm their reputation and make it easier for the government to target international students as a way to reduce net migration.

Harry Anderson also talked about how important it is for universities to check that they are following the right rules when it comes to recruiting students. This includes making sure students have the right level of English language skills and that their recruitment agents are working properly.
