IIT Hyderabad (IITH) has been officially recognized as an "Institute of National Eminence" by the Indian government. This recognition was given on March 27, 2025, by the Income Tax Department, under the Ministry of Finance. For the institute, this is a significant accomplishment that will benefit it going forward.
Thanks to this new recognition, people who donate to IIT Hyderabad can now get 100% tax exemption. This means donors can claim the full amount they give as a tax deduction. Earlier, donors were only able to get a 50% tax exemption. This change will encourage more people to donate, helping the institute grow and improve even more.
With the extra funding from donations, IIT Hyderabad can work faster on improving education, research, new technologies, and building better facilities. The honor also demonstrates the institute's growth and significance in the domains of innovation, science, and technology.
Prof. B. S. Murty, the Director of IIT Hyderabad, expressed his happiness about this recognition. He thanked everyone who supported the institute and invited more people, including philanthropists and businesses, to help with IIT Hyderabad’s mission. He said, “We welcome support to help us continue providing top-quality education, carry out important research, and develop new technologies that benefit the country.”
Prof. Mahendrakumar Madhavan, the Dean of IIT Hyderabad, also shared his thoughts. He said that giving to a cause that helps society is very fulfilling. The full tax exemption will now increase the impact of donations to IIT Hyderabad. They will help to strengthen the institute's research and development efforts.
IIT Hyderabad is already one of the top institutes in India. In the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), it was ranked 8th in engineering and 12th in the overall category.
In another exciting development, IIT Hyderabad and Swinburne University of Technology (Australia) have teamed up to set up a new research center. It is called the Swinburne-IITH Manufacturing, Materials, Energy, and Communication Technologies Joint Research Institute (SIMMECT). This new center will allow both universities to work together on important research projects, focusing on innovations that will have a big impact on industry and society.
